co2balance have been working with Bedruthan Steps Hotel for the past two years to offer their guests a carbon offsetting option for their stay at the Hotel.

Located on the dramatic north Cornwall coast, Bedruthan Steps Hotel has a strong environmental ethos, with sustainable initiatives in place including energy-efficient lighting, a solar-heated swimming pool and a waste reduction and recycling programme.

Carbon offsetting scheme

Working with co2balance, Bedruthan Steps offer their customers the option to offset the carbon created as a result of their stay, through planting a tree at local wood "Tinners Forest". The woodland is owned and managed by co2balance, to guarantee complete control over the land. Once matured, the woodlands will be transferred into a Charitable Trust.

Marketing of the scheme

• A dedicated web page about the offsetting scheme was created on Bedruthan Steps website to promote the initiative - www.bedruthan.com
• Storyboards about the scheme were created for the reception area of the hotel.
• Bespoke certificates were issued by the hotel to their guests to show that they have had a CarbonZero stay at the Hotel.

Success of the scheme

As a result of the scheme, over 1,100 native broadleaf trees have been planted, at a dedicated "Bedruthan Steps Hotel Wood", absorbing 990 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Bedruthan Steps and co2balance won the Eco Tourism Award at the 2006 Green Apple Awards for Environmental Excellence, achieving "Green Champion Status".

Our carbon offsetting projects

In addition to our Forestry Projects, we also run Energy Efficiency Projects. These projects are all based in Africa, and include providing local communities with energy efficient stoves, which produce far less carbon emissions that would have otherwise been created.
